In the Cup

Jammy, Exotic tropical flavours backed up with a sweet vanilla. Slightly wild and funky, it's a representation of what dry naturals can achieve with quality picking and drying practices

We especially love how clean and pronounced the flavours in this coffee is compared to the other lots we cupped. Truly a unique cup!


More about Yay Win, Ywangan and community grown lots

In specialty coffee, we go to great lengths to reward differentiation and promote the uniqueness of individual lots from communities instead of rewarding blending large volumes of coffees from multiple farms. We want producers to feel proud of their work when it is served by roasters and cafes, and not feel like their coffees are just another commodity product


Yay Win is just one of the many communities that grow coffee on the rolling hills of Ywangan. We spent a full day cupping village lots at the Amayar Women's Producer Group, which handles the sale and milling of village lots. All coffees were beautiful, and we really tasted how the effort the villagers went through to pick the ripest cherries, sort the defects, and dry the coffees evenly

What stood out to me for this particular coffee was their story:
The Yay Win Community didn't participate in the previous year's export of coffees due to the slightly lower prices the year before.

Imagine this: You grow coffee in a rural farm somewhere days away from civilisation. You have people from the big city telling you that we can pay you so much more for the coffee you just happen to grow in your backyard, but they tell you to work harder by picking ripe cherries, sorting, measuring moisture and all that. You drop it off at the processing station, nursing these cherries to their optimal dryness. 

Eventually, the last time you see these coffees is when their parchment forms are bagged and driven to the mill where they are hulled and you get green beans.

All the while, you hope and you pray that at the end of the harvest season, all your hard work pays off in the form of cash from the sale of these coffees to people in nations you have never heard of. It's extra income for you that you wish you'd get, but you can't know for sure

Sometimes they lose faith, and it takes a lot to rebuild that trust with the communities. We're glad that this year's lot is tasting beautiful, and we are humbled to support the story of coffees in this country with some amazing and unique coffees
